Sensex closes 97 points up in volatile trade

Mumbai: A benchmark index for Indian equities markets closed (provisional figure) 97 points higher Wednesday amid volatile trade.
The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the BSE, which opened at 17,631.69 points, closed at 17,719.37 points (provisional), 96.92 points or 0.55 percent up from its previous close at 17,622.45 points.
The Sensex touched a high of 17,809.21 points and slipped into the red at 17,579.59 points.
The 50-scrip S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange also ended higher at 5,372.5 points, up 37.35 points or 0.7 percent from its previous close.
Broader markets were in the green too, with the BSE 500 index closing 0.81 percent up from its previous close. The BSE midcap index was up 1.54 percent while the BSE smallcap index gained 0.92 percent.
Realty, consumer durables, metals and IT stocks rose. All 13 sectoral indices on the BSE closed in the green.
