In a shocking incident, three soldiers from the Army Ordnance Corps (AOC) Centre attempted to rape a 17-year old girl after beating up and chasing away her male friend on Sunday night at Mahendra Hills, police said.
The hapless boy immediately rushed home — the soldiers had snatched away his phone — and alerted his relatives who called the Tukaram Gate police.
The cops, together with the locals, overpowered the soldiers and rescued the girl. By that time, the girl had been attacked for more than an hour.
Police said Havildar L. Bahadhur, 28, Sepoy Tapas Maity, 29, and S. Narzary, 23, were on night patrol, allegedly in an inebriated condition, when they spotted the girl at around 9.45 pm. She had visited the Sai Baba temple near Mahendra Hills, and was sitting at a spot on the hillocks near the AOC Centre with her friend.
According to the boy’s close relative, the soldiers asked them what they were doing there at night. When they got up to leave, the soldiers stopped the girl.
When her friend intervened, they beat him up and drove him away after snatching his phone.
“He came to us and informed us about the incident. We went to the area and started searching for her while another group went to the police station and lodged a complaint,” said the relative.
The police team started searching the area with the local people and found the men and the victim. “One of the accused ran away. However, we caught him at the AOC Centre,” said Tukaram Gate police inspector B. Sudershan Reddy.
The victim, who sustained minor injuries, was sent to hospital for a medical examination. If the medical test proves she was raped, the offenders will be charged with rape.
