Ishrat Jahan encounter: CBI filed chargesheets, Amit Shah not named Ahmedabad: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday filed the supplementary chargesheet in the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case. Former Special Director of Intelligence Bureau Rajendar Kumar and three other officials have been named in the chargesheet. The three others who have been named are serving officers – T Mittal, M K Sinha and Rajiv Wankhede. While the former IB officer has been charged with murder, others have been charged with abduction and allied offences.

“Rajendar Kumar supplied weapons to former IPS Officer G L Singhal and therefore has been named as the main accused”, the CBI said.

Another highlight of the chargesheet is that no motive has been defined yet for the offence and against wide perception, no politician has been named yet.

However, if sources are to be believed, former Gujarat Home Minister Amit Shah had escaped the noose once again as he has not been named in the second chargesheet. The CBI had recently questioned Shah, the BJP general secretary and the party’s in-charge for Uttar Pradesh,in connection with the case. Sources said Shah was asked about the charges levelled by D G Vanzara in his resignation letter.

Earlier, the CBI is learnt to have provided additional documents to the Law Ministry for a fresh opinion on whether sanction is required from the Home Ministry to prosecute four Intelligence Bureau (IB) officers in the 2004 Ishrat Jahan encounter case.

The government’s legal arm had told the CBI to bring sufficient documents before a legal opinion could be provided on whether prior sanction is required to prosecute former special director Rajinder Kumar and three other officers — P Mittal, M K Sinha and Rajiv Wankhede.
