New Delhi: In 2013 Google's Women's Day doodle featured hand-drawn faces of 27 women from around the world and this year Google has added real women and some Zap Mama music to create its Women's Day 2014 doodle.
The video includes women from around the world, both the famous and the not so fanous and includes the likes of Malala Yousafzai, Mary Kom and Asha Bhosle.
"Women have historically been underrepresented in almost all fields: science, school curricula, business, politics-and, sadly, doodles. In addition to our continued effort for doodle diversity and inclusion, today's truly International Women's Day doodle features a host of inspiring women from around the world, including the President of Lithuania, a brave Pakistani education activist, an ever-curious explorer, and dozens more," Google says explaining the doodle.
While Women's Day is celebrated on March 8 every year, Google posted the doodle a day early, perhaps keeping in mind that March 8 this year falls on a weekend.
Last year Google didn't post its International Women's Day doodle on its India home page. In the 2013 doodle the shape of the Google logo appeared in the gaps between the faces of women of different nationalities/ethnicities. The face of an Indian woman with a little red bindi on her forehead held centrestage. Also noticeable was a face in a blue hijab.
In 2012 International Women's Day coincided with Holi and coincidentally the Women's Day doodle had a Holi-like feel about it.
In 2011, the 100th anniversary of the event, Google had posted an interactive Google Map inviting users to join tens of thousands people on bridges all over the world to show support for women's causes.
Google has doodled the International Women's Day on six previous occasions. First in 2005, then consecutively after a four-year break, from 2009 to 2012. International Women's Day was first celebrated on March 18, 1911 in four European countries - Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. The United Nations began officially supporting and sponsoring the event since 1975, the year that was designated as International Women's Year.
