Crimea crisis: Germany, Britain divided over fresh sanctions on Russia Kiev: Germany and Russia are reportedly divided over imposing of fresh sanctions on Russia after annexation of Crimea from Ukraine.

British Prime Minister David Cameron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel's meeting on Wednesday night failed to reach a consensus on the issue, as per an international news report.

Cameron wants heavy economic sanctions on Russia apart from its suspension from the upcoming G8 summit to be held in The Hague.

Meanwhile, Merkel is reportedly pushing for suspension of G8 summit instead of Russia's expulsion.

According to German officials, Merkel is of the opinion that annexation of Crimea does not call for imposition of heavy economic sanctions, the report stated.

The world leaders are set to meet on Thursday to discuss the situation in Crimea and Russia's setting up of naval bases in the region and pro-Russian troops storming the region.

Crimea's Parliament voted in favour of annexation and being part of Russia on March 16. The referendum was opposed by the Western countries who called it 'unconstitutional.'
