Chennai: A youth from Chennai who hacked into Microsoft website and stole product keys was arrested by Central Bureau of Investigation on Friday.
Sleuths from cyber cell of CBI from Delhi arrested D Prabhu in the city and produced him in Egmore court to get a transit remand.
Officials suspected that the youth might have hacked into government websites which use Microsoft's software.
Product keys are specific codes for software purchased from the company to certify that the copy of the program used is original.
CBI sleuths also seized hard disks and router that were used to commit the fraud, numbers of Microsoft Product Kits and other documents from his house. The bank account used by Prabhu was also freezed.
CBI has registered a case under different sections of the IT Act, 2000 on the allegations that Microsoft Volume License Service Centre (VLSC) agreements in respect of overseas and Indian customers of the Microsoft were being accessed to steal product keys and selling them online, said a press release.
