CMD REC inaugurates Maitri Ghar, a Widow's Ashram in Vrindavan under CSR initiatives

New Delhi: Rajeev Sharma, CMD, Rural Electrification Corporation Limited inaugurated the Maitri Ghar, an elderly widows' Ashram in Vrindavan, set up under Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives of REC, on 16th August 2014, in the presence of B N Sharma, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Power, Government of India, P N Singh, Managing Director, Dakshinanchal Vidyut Vitaran Nigam Limited of UP, Lt Gen Bhopinder Singh (Retd), President, Maitri and other senior officials of REC and Maitri.

Maitri Ghar, in partnership with Maitri, will be a home to 100 abandoned and destitute elderly widows who will live a life of respect and dignity in the home. The Ashram will provide them essentials for life including daily midday meals, fruits, nutritional supplements, clothing and healthcare.

Maitri Ghar will also serve as an Ageing Resource Centre for research in Ageing as well as be a training institute for elderly care, which will empower the widow mothers with skill building and income generation opportunities and ensure citizenship rights like Aadhar Card, voter card, pension etc and educate them how to access government-provided benefits.

Maitri, a developmental and humanitarian NGO working with vulnerable populations in India including Women with a focus on Destitute and Elderly Widows living in Vrindavan, was featured on Aamir Khan's show, Satyamev Jayate, in July 2012 for their work with the abandoned and elderly widow mothers in Vrindavan.
