Obscene show triggers violent clashes, scores injured Lucknow: A violent clash between the Jats and Dalits in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district, about 500 kilometres from state capital, saw several vehicles including those of the police, torched and left scores injured.

The clash occurred at Jatmujhera village in the district on Friday following an altercation between Jat and Dalit youths over alleged ‘obscene’ dance at a Ramlila function, police sources said.

Three Dalit youths who received bullet injuries were rushed to the hospital, sources said, adding that many others including some policemen were also injured in the violence.

Sources said that a Jat youth had allegedly slapped a Dalit after a heated argument over the ‘obscene’ function.

The matter was resolved after the intervention of the elders and a panchayat was convened to broker a compromise.

After the panchayat was over, a Jat youth was allegedly assaulted by the Dalits, while he was passing through their locality, sources said.

Infuriated over the assault, some Jat youths carrying firearms raided the locality and opened indiscriminate fire, critically wounding three Dalit youths. Some others also sustained injuries.

Both sides indulged in heavy stone pelting and even the cops, who reached there on being informed, came under attack.

Two police vehicles and a few other vehicles were torched. Security personnel in strength were deployed at the village to maintain law and order and senior officials were camping in the area.

Police were conducting raids to nab the culprits. Some people have been detained in this connection. The situation was stated to be tense but under control.
