Google's Nexus 9 challenge in hours as Apple launches super thin iPad Air 2 With the launch of the slim new Nexus 6, Google posed a serious challenge to the Apple iPad. But the challenge lasted all of 12 hours, for Apple announced its new iPad Air 2, a tablet that is as thin as its new iPhone and more powerful that everything else in the segment.

The latest version of the world’s most popular tablet computer is all of 6.1 mm thin and weighs less than a pound thanks to the anodised aluminum body. Of course, it has Retina display, but much better than the previous version as Apple have taken out the gap between the screen, the touch layer and the glass and laminated all three together. It now has a new A8X chip, which is 12 times faster the first iPad and 40 per cent better than the last version. The new device also comes with TouchID intergrated with ApplePay so that “users can unlock their iPad with just the touch of a finger and make purchases easily and securely within apps”.

“iPad is a magical piece of glass that runs more than 675,000 apps specifically designed for it, and is thin and light enough that you can comfortably hold it all day; the new iPad Air 2 is packed with amazing new innovations, weighs less than a pound, and at just 6.1 mm is the thinnest tablet in the world,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. And to put things in perspective, he said 225 million, yes million, iPads has been sold across the world so far. That is more than the top PC makers put together. This makes the iPad the most successful product Apple has ever made… maybe the most successful gadget ever.

The iPad Air 2 will come preloaded with the latest iOS 8.1 update, necessiated due to issues with network connections and the lack of Camera Roll in iOS 8. The camera on the tablet has been upgraded with an 8MP sensor and now gives users slow motion and time lapse along with 1080p Full HD recording. It supports the faster  802.11ac Wi-Fi with Multiple-In-Multiple-Out (MIMO) and supports 20 LTE bands more than any other device out there.
