Govt relaunches LPG direct benefit transfer scheme

New Delhi: The DBTL scheme was originally launched by the erstwhile United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government on June 1, 2013 at some cities including Puducherry and it finally covered 291 districts.

The DBTL required the consumer to have an Aadhaar number for availing LPG subsidy but the UPA government decided to drop the scheme after facing stiff opposition from public and political parties.

The BJP-led NDA government however reviewed the scheme and found out the difficulties faced by the consumers in availing the facilities and it then substantively modified the scheme before launching it again today.

The government has launched the modified DBTL scheme in 54 districts including Puducherry in the first phase. The plan is to extend the scheme to other parts of the country on January 1, 2015.

The Ministry said in a press statement that those who had joined the scheme earlier and had received cash subsidy in their bank accounts will not have to do anything to avail the revised service.
