Golden Globes: Celebrities voice support for 'Charlie Hebdo', 'Je Suis Charlie'

NY: While glitz, glam, and statues were par for the course at the 72nd annual Golden Globes, the recent events in Paris surrounding the Charlie Hebdo attacks were given the spotlight by a few attendees at the high-profile awards ceremony.

Support became apparent immediately when the actors and actresses started arriving on the red carpet. Helen Mirren wore a brooch with a pen attached, and held up a sign with the slogan “Je Suis Charlie” (I am Charlie). “American Horror Story” actress Kathy Bates also sported the sign, as well as “The Affair’s” Joshua Jackson and his wife, Diane Kruger. George and Amal Clooney also showed their support with “Je Suis Charlie” buttons.

The ceremony also provided a few moments, where those at the microphone used their global platform to express support. Jared Leto simply stated, “To our brothers, sisters, friends and family in France: Our thoughts, our prayers, our hearts are with you tonight. Je Suis Charlie.”

Hollywood Foreign Press Association president Theo Kingma used his allotted time to address the recent attacks on art and creativity, citing the North Korea-”The Interview” scandal and the Charlie Hebdo attacks. “Together we will stand united against anyone who would repress free speech, from North Korea to Paris,” he said to a standing ovation.

But the most outspoken moment of the night came when Clooney gave his acceptance speech for the Cecil B. DeMille award for Lifetime Achievement. “Today was an extraordinariy day,” he said. “There were millions of people that marched, not just in Paris, but all around the world. They were Christians and Jews and Muslims. And they didn’t march in protest. They marched in support of the idea that we will not walk in fear. So, Je Suis Charlie.”
