TRAI may regulate IM apps like WhatsApp and Skype in India

New Delhi: TRAI, the telecom regulatory of India has informed that it is in the process to prepare a regulatory framework for IM and VoIP applications.

As a result, WhatsApp, Viber, Skype and other similar messaging apps in the country may end up paying revenue to telecom operators.

According to reports, consultation paper on regulatory framework for over the top services has been released by TRAI already. The final verdict has not been decided yet. It may take some time and so companies such as Viber and WhatsApp will not have to face any trouble for now.

TRAI had refused to regulate OTT services in August last year. It was noted that no consultation process will be initiated on the subject. However, the tables have turned now. There is no reason why TRAI is looking to take action. OTTs and TSPs have been in a headlock over this matter for quite some time now.

As traditional communication such as calls and texts are gradually disappearing, the IM and VoIP services are eating into their revenue, TSPs claims. The OTT services are depended on data networks. These in return boost internet sales from the network providers.

In case the TRAI is really willing to impose regulations on OTT services, apps like WhatsApp and Skype may have to pay considerable amounts to TSPs.
