Belly dancers, known as Bardis and Egyptian Shakira jailed for 'debauchery' Cairo: Egyptian prosecutors Wednesday ordered two belly dancers jailed for four days pending further questioning allegedly for performing in steamy videos in the latest crackdown on controversial performers in the conservative country.

According to the Gulf News report, the jailing of the dancers, known as Bardis and the Egyptian Shakira, followed initial investigations with them for allegedly inciting debauchery.

Police had arrested the two in a raid on a nightclub in the Cairo upmarket quarter of Al Mohandessin where they were performing, security sources said.

They are being kept in remand in the Agouza Police station in Cairo.

Police investigations found out that the two dancers had appeared in “immoral videos” and performed dances “full of sexual insinuations”, one security source said.

The sweep came in response to legal complaints filed by lawyers against both dancers accusing them of outraging public morality and harming Egyptian women’s image, the source added.

The two could be referred to a court trial on charges of inciting debauchery. They could face jail terms of up to one year if convicted.

Bardis, 29, and Shakira, 28, have recently appeared in two separate music videos, which detractors say are teeming with sexual innuendo.

Last month, an Egyptian court sentenced a female singer and two men to one year in prison for participating in a racy music video.
