Dinanagar: The three heavily armed terrorists, who unleashed terror and killed several people in Punjab’s Gurdaspur on Monday, may have sneaked into India from Pakistan after crossing the Ravi river and had two more targets marked, the data obtained from their GPS devices has revealed.
Newspaper reports on Wednesday said that the two global positioning system (GPS) recovered from the three slain terrorists, suspected to be associated with Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), revealed that they started from Shakhargarh tehsil of Pakistan and entered India from Tash area along the border.
A government official, requesting anonymity, was also quoted as saying, “We have sought help from the US to pinpoint the location and further analyse the devices.”
If it is verified, it would establish concerns about more such attacks being planned by the LeT in Punjab, which battled a Sikh insurgency in the 1980s and 90s.
All three terrorists were killed by the special units of the Punjab Police after fierce gunbattle lasting over 11 hours.
Forensic experts from Chandigarh, who arrived at the police station complex here yesterday, are looking for more clues about the identity of the three terrorists who besieged the complex for over 11 hours on Monday.
The forensic team examined the building where the terrorists were holed up. The car, which was hijacked by the terrorists and on which they came to the police station complex, was also being examined.
Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Sumedh Singh Saini had said that the terrorists were carrying AK-47 automatic weapons and Chinese-made hand grenades.
"We are examining clues from their clothes and other things that they were carrying," a forensic team official was reported as saying.
A night vision device was also found near the bridge on the Amritsar-Pathankot track on which five improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were planted. The night vision devices may have been smuggled from Afghanistan, forensic experts believe.
The track from where it was found is 5-km away from Dinanagar.
“Around 1kg RDX was used in each of the devices. We have found nine packets of 500 grams near the track,” a police official said.
The IEDs were pressure devices without timer that would have gone off under train pressure but were recovered in time, the official further added.
Seven people, including a senior police officer, three home guard personnel and three civilians, were killed in the terror attack.
Dinanagar town, which is just 12 km from the India-Pakistan border, is located 25 km from the Jammu and Kashmir border and 235 km from Chandigarh.
