BCCI chief Jagmohan Dalmiya dies at 75, Prez Pranab, PM Modi, Amit Shah and CMs mourns

BCCI chief Jagmohan Dalmiya dies at 75, Prez Pranab, PM Modi, Amit Shah and CMs mourns New Delhi: Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Jagmohan Dalmiya, who was admitted to hospital few days back after he complained of chest pain, passed away at a city hospital this evening following a massive cardiac arrest.

The 75-year-old Dalmiya was admitted to the city’s B M Birla Hospital on Thursday night after which he also underwent a coronary angiography.

President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Sunday condoled the death of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Jagmohan Dalmiya. “Heartfelt condolences on the passing away of Jagmohan Dalmiya,” the President tweeted as the passing away of the sports administrator tonight plunged the cricketing world in grief.

“My thoughts are with the family of Shri Jagmohan Dalmiya in this hour of grief. May Shri Dalmiya’s soul rest in peace,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi also tweeted.

NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Sunday night condoled the demise of BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya, saying he will always be remembered as the first person from a third world country to hold the office of ICC.

"I am deeply saddened to know about the demise of Jagmohan Dalmiya. He will always be remembered as the first person from a third world country to hold the office of the International Cricket Council (ICC), which is the highest governing body of world cricket," Pawar said.

"He made BCCI a powerful and influential cricket body in the field of sports. May his soul rest in eternal peace," the NCP chief said.

The 75-year-old Dalmiya was admitted to the city’s B M Birla Hospital on Thursday night after which he also underwent a coronary angiography. Reactions also started pouring in from Union ministers with HRD minister Smriti Irani condoling his death. “My thoughts are with the family of Shri Jagmohan Dalmiya in this hour of grief. May Sri Dalmiya’s soul rest in peace,” she said.

BJP President Amit Shah described Dalmiya’s demise as “a big loss not only for Indian but world cricket”. In a post on twitter, Shah also offered his “deepest condolences to the family of Shri Jagmohan Dalmiya”.

Condolence messages were posted on the micro-blogging site also by other political leaders and chief ministers expressing grief at Dalmiya’s demise. Union Minister Rao Inderjit Singh tweeted, “Sad to learn about the demise of BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya. He was the star of Indian Cricket administration. RIP.”

The chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, wrote on the micro-blogging site that Dalmiya’s “contribution to cricket as administrator will always be remembered”.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das said Dalmiya was a popular figure in the cricketing world and his passing away would leave a void. N Chandrababu Naidu, the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, took to twitter to offer “condolences to the family members & well wishers of Sri Jagmohan Dalmiya” and said he was “saddened to hear about his demise”.
