Short coverings dent markets, Sensex closes 378 points down, Nifty below 7,800 Mumbai: Short coverings on the back of negative cues subdued investor sentiment and led a barometer index of the Indian equity markets to provisionally close 378.14 points down on Tuesday.

 The S&P BSE Sensex closes 1.45%, or 378.14 points, lower at 25,743.26, while the Nifty 50 settles 1.67%, or 131.85 points, lower at 7,783.35, falling for the fifth consecutive session as Asian markets hit a one-month low on continued concerns about the state of the global economy, and on potential U.S. interest rate hikes.

3:29pm: The S&P BSE Sensex is trading 1.51%, or 395.67 points, down at 25,725.73, while the Nifty 50 is down 1.72%, or 135.80 points, at 7,779.40.

3.06pm: The S&P BSE Sensex is trading down 347.38 points, or 1.30 %, to 25,781.66, while the 50-share CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) slipped 1.52%, or 120.00 points, to 7,795.20.

2:21pm: The S&P BSE Sensex is now down 195.90 points, or 0.75%, to 25,925.50, while the Nifty is trading lower by 75 points, or 0.95%, at 7,840.20.

2:15pm: The rupee strengthens marginally to 66.38 per US dollar, up 0.11% from its previous close of 66.45. The local unit had opened the session at 66.43.

2:10pm: Telecom stocks are down after Fitch ratings said on Tuesday that Reliance Communications Ltd’s acquisition of Sistema Shyam Teleservices may spark further mergers and acquisitions in the Indian Indian telecom sector. R-Com dives 11%, Idea Cellular is down 4.1% and Bharti Airtel 1.1%.

2:01pm: After falling 3.3% in the morning trade, shares of Hindalco Industries Ltd gain 2.1% to Rs.81.5 after the company posted unexpected profit in the September quarter. The company reported a profit of Rs.103.27 crore, up 31.1% from a year ago. A Bloomberg poll of 18 brokers estimated that the company may post net loss of Rs.96.46 crore.

1:55pm: Auto stocks are trading higher. Bajaj Auto Ltd is up 1.9% to Rs.2,454, Hero MotoCorp Ltd 1.3% to Rs.2,653.65, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd 1.3% to Rs.4,696.05, Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd 1% to Rs.1,257.85.

1:39pm: Container Corp. of India Ltd rises 2% to Rs.1,430. The government is planning to sell 5% stake in the company. The government currently holds 61.8% in the company.

1:24pm: The S&P BSE Sensex is currently trading lower by 236.73 points, or 0.91%, at 25,884.67, while the Nifty is down 86.30 points, or 1.09%, to 7,828.90.

1:16pm: GVK Power and Infrastructure Ltd gains 6.9% to Rs.8.10 after the company said its net loss narrowed to Rs.123.5 crore in the September quarter compared with Rs.235.57 crore a year ago.

1:02pm: PTC India Financial Services Ltd plunges 14% to Rs.41.20 after the company reported sharp rise in its gross non-performing assets to 4.07% in the September quarter compared with 0.08% a year ago.

12:47pm: Dredging Corporation of India Ltd is up 3.4% to Rs.348.90 after the company said its net profit rose 434% to Rs.17.31 crore in the September quarter compared with Rs.3.24 crore a year ago.

12:31pm: InterGlobe Aviation Ltd, which runs IndiGo, is currently trading up 16% at Rs.887. Jet Airways is trading down 2.6%, while SpiceJet is down 4.6%.

12:18pm: Shares of Dr Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd extend losses over a five-day period to 22% on receiving a warning letter from the US drug regulator over quality issues at its two API manufacturing plants and a formulation unit in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

12:00pm: The S&P BSE Sensex is now down 165.52 points, or 0.63%, to 25,955.88, while the Nifty is trading lower by 59.95 points, or 0.76%, to 7,855.25.

11:46am: Hindustan Petroleum Corp. Ltd (HPCL) is down 5% to Rs.754 after the company reported a net loss of Rs.320.5 crore in the September quarter compared with net profit of Rs.850.21 crore.

11:34am: Financial Technologies India Ltd climbs 5.8% to Rs.104 after the company said in a notice to BSE that it will sell 3.6% stake in Indian Energy Exchange for Rs.100 crore. The company said it will sell 1.61% stake to SG BRIC III for Rs.34.64 crore and 3.02% stake to Singuler Guff NJDM Investment Holdings for Rs.64.99 crore.

11:12am: Pfizer Ltd is up 3.8% to Rs.2,530.75 after the company said its net profit surged to Rs.61.64 crore in the September quarter compared with Rs.1.76 crore a year ago.

11:00am: GPT Infraprojets Ltd surges 17.7% to Rs.161 after the company reported 170.71% increase in its net profit to Rs.1.85 crore in the September quarter compared with Rs.68.18 lakh a year ago.

10:48am: State Trading Corp of India Ltd rose 2.8% to Rs.157.90 after the company reported a net profit of Rs.1.02 crore in the September quarter compared with net loss of Rs.2.33 crore a year ago.

10:37am: The S&P BSE Sensex is now down 144.28 points, or 0.55%, to 25,977.12, while the Nifty is trading lower by 53.70 points, or 0.68%, to 7,861.50.

10:26am: IndiGo posts solid gains on listing, surging as much as 17.4% to Rs.898. Soon after the listing, Jet Airways and SpiceJet erase early gains to trade lower by 3.5% and 5%, respectively.

10:18am: NHPC Ltd jumps 5.1% to Rs.18.70 after the company reported 73% increase in its net profit to Rs.1,180.87 crore in the September quarter compared with Rs.684.1 crore a year ago.

10:11am: Jamna Auto Industries Ltd climbs 6.2% to Rs.243 after the the company reported 381% increase in its net profit to Rs.15.30 crore in the September quarter compared with Rs.3.18 crore a year ago.

10:04am: Man Industries India Ltd gains 3.6% to Rs.98.50 after the company reported 444% increase in its net profit to Rs.20.29 crore in the September quarter compared with Rs.3.73 crore a year ago.

9:55am: Hindalco Industries Ltd falls 2.5% to Rs.77.80 ahead of its earnings. Hindalco Industries will probably report a second-quarter loss of Rs.96.5 crore on Tuesday, according to the average of 18 analyst estimates in a Bloomberg survey, compared with a profit a year ago.

9:47am: Among the sectoral indices, the BSE Metal index is the top sectoral loser, down 1.1%, followed by Oil & Gas, IT and Teck indices, which are down 0.8% each. The BSE Power and FMCG indices are down 0.5% each. The BSE Consumer Durables is the top gainer, up 1%.

9:40am: Indian stocks extend declines for a second day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party lost state elections in Bihar.

The 30-share S&P BSE Sensex is now trading lower by 121.83 points, or 0.47%, at 25,999.57, while the 50-share Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) is down 43.25 points, or 0.55%, to 7,871.95.

9:32am: Aviation stocks are trading higher ahead of IndiGo listing. Jet Airways India Ltd is up 1.5% to Rs.447.05, while SpiceJet Ltd rises 2.5% to Rs.52.40.

9:25am: The rupee opens marginally higher at at 66.43 per US dollar compared with its previous close of 66.45 tracking gains in Asian currencies. Traders also avoided long positions as markets are closed on Wednesday and Thursday on occasion of Diwali.

9:20am: The yield on India’s 10-year benchmark bond is trading at 7.723% compared with its Monday’s close of 7.727%.

9:15am: The dollar edges higher to 123.18 yen from 123.15 yen in the previous session. The euro slips to $1.0747 from $1.0754.

9:10am: Benchmark US crude is up 18 cents to $44.05 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Brent crude climbs 10 cents to $47.29 a barrel.

9:05am: Japan’s Nikkei 225 falls 0.7% to 19,502.88 and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng drops 1.4% to 22,404.30. The Shanghai Composite Index slipped slips 0.5% to 3,627.97 and South Korea’s Kospi loses 0.8% to 2,009.13. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 is down 0.9% to 5,074.40. Markets in Southeast Asia are mostly lower.

9:00am: Asian stock markets extend losses on Tuesday as investors fret over the fragile outlook for global growth and the Federal Reserve’s plan to raise US interest rates soon.

8:55am: Dow Jones industrial average lost 179.85 points, or 1%, to 17,730.48, slipping back into negative territory for the year. The Standard and Poor’s 500 lost 20.62 points, or 1%, to 2,078.58. The Nasdaq composite fell 51.82 points, or 1%, to 5,095.30.
