Dr VR Raju has always been a brilliant student throughout his career. Dr Raju did well in graduation and post graduation. After completing his Masters Degree and PhD in History  he did his MPhil in Journalism & Mass Communication from Madurai University.

He earned the Bachelor in Law from Berhampur University. His doctoral Thesis - "Political Participation of Women in Odisha" (1921-1947)  is a notable work in the history of Odisha.
 
In this work a modest attempt has been made to present the role of women in the freedom struggle which not only brought the country's liberation on their social emancipation but also enabled them to project a new revolutionary image in the world. This piece of historical research is based on the contemporary records available in different libraries and archives.

Previously nothing has been written about the role of women in India's freedom movement. Their political activities were totally neglected.

This Thesis is the first historical study presenting the socio political activities of the women in India. This work also proved to be a great source of information to the research scholars to do further research in this aspect.
 
Odishara Baraputra Biswanath Das, Kalingarani Karubaki, Mahiyasi Mahila Sarala, Door Sanchar Bigyanara Itihas and Swadhinata  Sangramare Utkaliya Nari are the most popular history books of him.

His books on literature for neoliterates are also very popular in Odisha.

Books like Pokhariru Potadhan, Rupa Sagadi re Suna Kania, Mo Gao Mo Saraga, Juge Juge Paribesa, Kasia Kapila, Kalingara Gapa and Kalamanika are based on the theme of Odisan Culture and stories. His book "A Jugara Radha" received National Award from Govt of India in 1985.

He wrote books on the life history of eminent saints like Raman Maharshi, Swami Sivananda, Mahayogi Aurobinda, Satyasai Baba, Santh Kabi Arakhita Das.  His books like Bidyut Bigyan, Bidyut Wiring Sikhya, Radio Bigyan (Two Vol.) are popular for its simple language in Odiya. These books are very useful for the craftsman's education.
