ISRO & Mexico Space Agency hold joint workshop on Disaster Management

ISRO & Mexico Space Agency hold joint workshop on Disaster Management New Delhi: Scientists from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) visited Mexico City on July 13th-15th to participate in a Joint Workshop with the Mexican Space Agency.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Mexican Space Agency (AEM) held a Joint Workshop on “Best Practices in the Use of Space Technology for Disaster Management” from July 13th to 15th, 2016. Three senior ISRO scientists travelled to Mexico City, namely Dr. V. Bhanumurthy, Dr. J.V. Thomas and Dr. V.M. Ramanujam, to work along their Mexican counterparts, namely Dr. Javier Mendieta, Director General of AEM, Dr. Carlos Valdes, Director General of CENAPRED, Mr. Julio Castillo, Director of Space Security and Mr. Oscar Zepeda, Director of Remote Sensing.

The workshop had dedicated sessions on effects of hydro-meteorological phenomenon of cyclones, droughts, floods and forestry; geological phenomenon of earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides and volcanic activities; and human generated activities. It also dwelled upon the use of Space Technologies for Communication and geo-location for disaster management such as telecommunications, Global Navigation Satellite System, use of small satellites and best practices developed.

For the Mexican Space Agency, India is an essential partner for the development of technology to save lives by preventing and managing disasters. The areas that this workshop covered, especially earth observation, are one of the priorities of Indian – Mexican collaboration on the subject.

Mexico and India began their space cooperation activities with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on Space Cooperation for Peaceful Purposes in 2014. Since then, the officials of ISRO and AEM have maintained constant interaction.

During the visit of Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi, to Mexico City on June 8th, the leaders highlighted the cooperation on space science as one of the most important areas of the bilateral relation. They also called for the efficient use of space related resources available in India and Mexico for remote sensing, advance warning for disaster prevention and launch of satellites between AEM and ISRO.
