Jammu and Kashmir: Gunfight between 62-RR, police, and terrorists underway, one terrorist killed in Shopian Jammu and Kashmir:  An early morning gunfight seems to have broken out in Wangam, located in the Shopian district of  Jammu and Kashmir. The gunfight occurred between the 62-Rashtriya Rifles along with Jammu and Kashmir police and terrorists. According to preiminary sources, two army personnel have been injured so far while one terrorist is reported to be killed.

The injured soldiers have been evacuated and are stable. The current gunfight comes just days after a similar encounter in Shopian district. On Saturday, One terrorist was killed and a soldier was injured today in an encounter with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district. The encounter took place shortly after security forces had launched a search operation in a village in the district according to reports from the police.

As a result of the operation on Saturday, the Police assisted by security forces cordoned off Dobjan village, 60 kms from Srinagar, after getting information about the presence of four terrorists, a police official said. He said that the terrorists who were hiding in a hose started firing as the security forces moved in. The terrorists kept firing in an attempt to break the cordon, the police official said.

A fierce gun battle ensued as a result of which a militant was killed in the encounter in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district Saturday. According to reports another police officer said the operation was launched at Doobjan after security forces received information about the presence of militants there. He said that on spotting them, the militants opened fire. In retaliation, the forces gunned down a militant, he said, adding that a soldier was injured in the encounter.

The other militants managed to escape, he said. The militant has been identified as Waseem Khanday. He had allegedly joined Hizbul Mujahideen after he snatched a gun from a guard at the house of a CPM leader. Further details regarding the current operation are awaited.
