Woman raped on moving train

New Delhi: A 32-year-old woman was raped in a moving train near Shahdara by three men who allegedly entered the ladies coach with the intention to rob the passengers, said the police.

The incident took place on Thursday in Jan Nayak Express when it was on its way to Old Delhi railway station after being diverted from its usual route.

The victim was alone in the coach when the three accused entered the train. They robbed her of her belongings and one of them allegedly forced himself on her during which the woman bit his private parts.

It was his scream that alarmed two Railway Protection Force constables -- Sanjay Kumar and guard Binod Kumar – patrolling along the tracks at the Old Delhi railway station, and they rushed inside. While the other two managed to flee with the woman’s bag, the injured accused, Shahbaz (21), was held.

A senior police officer told The Hindu that the accused got into the train when it slowed down on the Old Yamuna Bridge near Shahdara on Thursday night.

“All other passengers, barring the victim, had already deboarded the train. She too had planned to get down at the Old Delhi railway station. But before that could happen, she found herself surrounded by three strangers. Two of them snatched her handbag while a third, identified as Shahbaz, tried to strangle her first and then forced himself on her. The other two held her hand to stop her from resisting,” said the officer.

Shahbaz and others have been booked under various sections. A hunt has been launched for the other two accused. The victim is a housewife from Bihar’s Darbhanga district.
