Try 'Mezcal' next time you hit the bar Heard of Mezcal!!! Its something new in the world of Mexican drinks hitting the market soon.

Mezcal is an alcoholic beverage from the state of Oaxaca in Mexico, made from the heart of the agave plant, known as piñas, which are roasted in wood-fired pits. This roasting gives mezcal its signature smoky flavor.

Like tequila, mezcal is made from the agave plant. Unlike tequila however, which is made solely from blue agave, mezcal can be made from a variety of over 200 species of agave (so technically, tequila is, in fact, a type of mezcal).

Master Mezcalier, Mr. Sergio Inurrigarro, President of the ProMezcal Association of Mexico was in New Delhi this week to host exclusive mezcal tastings.

The Embassy of Mexico in India organised tasting events across the city, including Mexican restaurants Arriba and La Bodega. Guests ranged from diplomats and members of the hospitality industry, to food & beverage bloggers and wine connoisseurs.

The tasting events were an excellent opportunity for guests to sample mezcals from different parts of Mexico, including Guanajuato, Guerrero, Michoacán, Oaxaca and Zacatecas, and learn about the proper way to drinking them.

A drink of amazing variety and complexity, mezcal is handcrafted in Oaxacan villages. The artisanal production ensures that each batch has its own unique flavor.

The white, unaged mezcal is called joven and sometimes comes with a worm inside the bottle (actually it’s a larva found in the agave plant). Reposado mezcal is aged for six months and añejo is aged for a year or more.

Mezcal cocktails have been making waves in trendy restaurants and hotel bars around the world. The drink is expected to arrive to Indian shores by early 2017.
