Martyrs Day 2017: Twitterati pay respect to Mahatma Gandhi on his death anniversary Pune: Twitterati on Monday tweeted respects to Mahatma Gandhi on his death anniversary. In India, several days are declared as Martyrs’ Day (Sarvodaya Day or Shaheed Diwas) in the honour of those who laid their lives for the nation.

January 30 is considered as Martyr’s Day as it marks the assassination of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Gandhi was killed in 1948 by Nathuram Godse.

President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice President Hamid Ansari and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of his 69th death anniversary at Rajghat in the national capital.

After paying his respects, the Prime Minister joined a group of people offering their prayers at an inter-religious meeting.

Earlier the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi, on his Punya Tithi.

"पूज्य बापू की पुण्यतिथि पर उनको शत-शत नमन...Tributes to beloved Bapu on his Punya Tithi", the Prime Minister said.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Union Urban Development Venkaiah Naidu were also among those who paid homage to the Father of the Nation at Rajghat, where an interfaith prayer was held.

Remembering Mahatma on his death anniversary, Modi tweeted, “Tributes to beloved Bapu on his Punya Tithi”. Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated on this day in 1948 here.

Others who paid tribute to the Father of the Nation included veteran BJP leader L K Advani and Union Minister Rao Inderjit Singh.

The three service chiefs – Admiral Sunil Lanba, Air Chief Marshal B S Dhanoa and General Bipin Rawat were also present.

At Rajghat, a gun salute was given and a group of singers sang devotional songs as school students and people from different walks of life gathered there to pay respects to the Mahatma.

A two-minute silence was also observed across the country at 11 AM to mark the Martyrs’ Day.

An ardent supporter of non-violence, Mahatma Gandhi was killed by Nathuram Godse on 30th January 1948

India is among 15 other countries which celebrate Martyrs Day in respect to freedom fighters. March 23 is also declared as the martyrs day in India to remember the sacrifice of freedom fighters like Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar.

Government organisations blow siren at 11 am to commemorate the day. Commoners also stop their work and observe silence for two minutes as the remembrance of the martyrs.

An inter-religious prayer will also be held in Rajpath in New Delhi to mark the day. Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu will today inaugurate improvement works at Gandhi’s Samadhi. The makeover of this place was pending since last 15 years.
