Amulya Kumar Patnaik is new Delhi Police commissioner New Delhi: Government has appointed Amulya Kumar Patnaik as commissioner of Delhi police. Patnaik, a 1985 batch IPS officer from Union Territories cadre, will replace Alok Verma, who has been named as the director of CBI. Patnaik hails from Odisha and is currently posted as Delhi police special commissioner (administration).

He has also served as joint commissioner (operations) in Delhi police.

Patnaik, though a batch junior to Mishra and Kumar, was apparently chosen due to his 'clean' image. He hails from Odisha.

Mishra is now with the Central Reserve Police Force as an Additional Director General while Kumar is an Additional Director General with the Central Industrial Security Force. Both are 1984 batch IPS officers.

Patnaik is also credited for launching special units to prevent crimes against women such as the anti-obscene calls cell and anti-stalking cell.

Accroding to reports, government picked Patnaik because of his 'clean' image, overlooking two senior 1984 batch UT cadre IPS officers -- Dharmendra Kumar and Deepak Mishra.

After the appointment of current Delhi Police commissioner Alok Verma as CBI chief, Patnaik along with Deepak Mishra and Dharmendra Kumar were the top contenders for the post.
