In this century, no citizen of India should live in darkness: PM Modi in Jharkhand Sahibganj: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday laid the foundation stone of a multi-modal terminal on the River Ganga in Jharkhand, a project which is an important component of the proposed national waterway between Varanasi and Haldia and a four-lane bridge on the Ganga river in Jharkhand's Sahibganj district.

The multi-modal terminal is an important component of the development of the National Waterway-1 from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh to Haldia in West Bengal, a distance of 1,390 km.

The four-lane bridge on the Ganga river will be connecting Sahibganj, some 450 km from state capital Ranchi, to Manihari in Bihar's Katihar district.

Modi inaugurated the projects in the presence of Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das and Union Minister of Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Nitin Gadkari among others.

Speaking on the occasion, Modi said: "Our government has taken historic decision to develop waterways. It has taken the developing waterways as a challenge. The Varanasi to Haldia waterways will be developed and open a new door for development."

"The waterways on the Ganga river will connect Jharkhand to the world. Jharkhand is a land-locked state but after developing waterways, it will get connected to the world and become part of the economic revolution," he added.

"Corruption and black money destroyed the country like termites. With people's blessings, I am fighting corruption and will continue to do so."

Here are the highlights of PM Modi's speech in Jharkhand:

# 'Imandari Ka Yug' has started in India. A good life can be led even without looting the poor

# Those who have looted the poor will have to return to the poor what they have looted. I need your blessings for this

# The poor of India want to lead a life of dignity and they want opportunities to prove themselves. I have faith in their skills

# LED bulbs not only save energy but also electricity bills

# In this century, no citizen of India should live in darkness

#I congratulate the Jharkhand Government for harnessing solar energy

# As far as infrastructure is concerned, we are ensuring that the infrastructure is also environment-friendly

# In addition to highways and railways, we are focussing on waterways

# This project will open several doors of progress for the people of Jharkhand

# One of the major things these projects will do is provide employment to people of Jharkhand. Skill development will also be boosted

# Nitin Gadkari is a minister who can get development work completed on time

# Today we begin work on a big project over the Ganga, that will link Bihar and Jharkhand. This project will ensure faster development

# Through development, we want to serve the tribal communities. Quicker development will lead to quicker empowerment

# Several development works are being launched that will benefit the Santhal Pargana

# I am delighted to come to the land associated with Bhagwan Birsa Munda

During his Jharkhand visit, the Prime Minister will also inaugurate the Govindpur-Jamtara-Dumka-Sahebganj Highway and dedicate to the nation a Solar Power Facility at the Sahebganj District Court premises and Sahebganj District Hospital.

The multi-modal terminal at Sahebganj is an important component of the development of the National Waterway-1 from Varanasi to Haldia, the Prime Minister’s Office said earlier. The state-of-the-art terminal will have a cargo handling capacity of 2.24 million tons per annum, it said.

Construction of the multi-modal terminal at Sahebganj will contribute to the creation of business and employment opportunities in Jharkhand, the PMO said.

Rural areas in Jharkhand will particularly benefit from this project, it added.
