Delhi civic polls 2017: Opinion polls give BJP landslide win in MCD polls New Delhi: The Capital is set to vote in a triangular contest for 272 seats in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections on Sunday. The Congress, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were involved in a high-pitched campaign, attacking and counter-attacking one another and promising freebies to voters. Interestingly, a newbie, the Swaraj India Party, led by Yogendra Yadav, a factional group of AAP, is proclaiming that it is also in the race.

The party that wins will get the much-needed confidence to contest the Gujarat Assembly polls later this year.

While all three biggies are claiming a massive win, two opinion polls gave the BJP a landslide victory in all three corporations.

The Rajouri Garden Assembly bypoll on April 13 almost set the tone for the MCD elections. While the BJP is upbeat after its victory, the Congress is happy with its increased vote share there. The AAP is a bit worried as its candidate lost the deposit in Rajouri Garden.

Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia had said after the party’s defeat that the people in the area were unhappy.

He said that they were unhappy with AAP MLA Jarnail Singh’s decision to quit and move to Punjab for the Assembly elections, and it should not be taken as a precursor to the municipal corporation elections.

In the last lap of campaigning, a bitter war of words erupted, with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal claiming that the people would “risk” their children’s health if they voted for the BJP as it had failed to provide proper sanitation.

A win in the MCD polls is crucial for AAP to give its volunteers the much-needed ammunition to keep going, after the party’s poor show in Punjab and Goa and the Rajouri Garden Assembly seat.

For the Congress, winning a good number of seats should be extremely crucial to boost the morale of the party workers, especially after loyalists like Arvinder Singh Lovely changing camps to the BJP.

Former chief minister Sheila Dikshit has said that the MCD polls would prove to be a litmus test for Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken. She said that if the Congress wins a good number of seats, Maken will prove his detractors wrong.

The BJP is pinning its hopes on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s achievements, and the party is hoping to return to the civic bodies for the third time in a row.
