Delhi Metro fares likely to go up from Wednesday, minimum ticket price Rs 10 and maximum Rs 50 New Delhi: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) board accepted on Monday a recommendation to increase the minimum passenger fare from Rs 8 to Rs 10 and the maximum fare from Rs 30 to Rs 50. The new fare structure is likely to be introduced from Wednesday.

“The DMRC board has accepted the recommendation of the FFC (Fare Fixation Committee). The DMRC will now announce the new fares shortly,” a board member told HT.

The board is headed by Union urban development secretary Rajib Gauba.

The new fare structure

    Up to 2km:     Rs 10
    2 to 5km:       Rs 15
    5 to 12km:     Rs 20
    12 to 21km:   Rs 30
    21 to 32km:   Rs 40
    Over 32km:    Rs 50

Delhi Metro fares were last revised in 2009, when the minimum fare was increased from Rs 6 to Rs 8 and the maximum fare from Rs 22 to Rs 30.

The three-member committee to fix fares was set up in June 9 last year.

The DMRC has been requesting for a fare increase since 2009. It faced obstacles as the Centre had failed to set up a fare panel, which finally saw the light of day in 2016.

Since 2009, electricity tariff has gone up by over 90%, accounting for almost 30% of DMRC’s total operating costs.

Fare fixation committees are temporary in nature and are set up by the Centre only when a metro rail corporation requests a fare hike.

The Delhi Metro fare panel was headed by Justice ML Mehta, a retired judge of Delhi high court. The other two members were Delhi chief secretary KK Sharma and additional secretary in urban development ministry DS Mishra.

The panel had invited flak after going on a whirlwind tour of Hong Kong, Singapore and Taipei to study the metro fare structure there, barely a month after it was set up.
