Jain Muni Tarun Sagar dies at 51, PM Modi, President Kovind offer condolences New Delhi: Jain monk Tarun Sagar passed away on Saturday at Delhi’s Radhapuri temple after a prolonged illness. The 51-year-old seer, who was suffering from jaundice and other ailments, breathed his last at around 3 am. He was earlier admitted to a private medical centre in Delhi.

According to some followers, he had stopped taking his medication and opted for Santhara - the Jain ritual of fasting to death. He enjoyed a massive fan following even outside the Jain community and was known for his nationalist views.

In fact, Tarun Sagar was also responsible for the RSS changing its gear. Long before they did away with shorts it was one of his remarks that caused them to change a part of their uniform.

The Digambar Jain monk, who attended an RSS Vijaya Dashami event in Nagpur in 2009, suggested they do away with leather belts, which would help stop animal slaughter. The appeal is believed to have worked and the RSS changed is uniform.

Upon his passing, the RSS said in a statement: "The passing away of saint Tarun Sagar in painful for us. His death has left a void for whole India, especially the RSS. His sermon 'Kadve Bol' gave elegant direction to the community."

In 2010, he had also appealed to CM Chouhan to not open up any new liquor shops.

Tarun Sagar was greatly respected by various politicians including PM Modi, Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar and Rajasthan CM Vasundhara Raje.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over his demise and said that he will always be remembered for his rich ideals, compassion and contribution to the society.

“Deeply pained by the untimely demise of Muni Tarun Sagar Ji Maharaj. We will always remember him for his rich ideals, compassion and contribution to society. His noble teachings will continue inspiring people. My thoughts are with the Jain community and his countless disciples,” the Prime Minister tweeted.

Modi said the Jain monk’s noble teachings will continue to inspire people.

President Ram Nath Kovind also expressed grief over Muni Tarun Sagar’s demise. “Our country has lost a well-respected spiritual leader. My condolences to his countless followers,” he tweeted.

Home minister Rajnath Singh also condoled the demise of the Jain monk.

Born on June 26, 1967, in Dahoh district of Madhya Pradesh, the renowned Digambar Jain monk has a huge following in the Jain community. He was popularly known for his sermons titled ‘Kadve Pravachan’. He accepted celibacy and decided to lead a life of a monk in the year 1981.

His last rites will be performed in Uttar Pradesh’s Muradnagar later in the day.

He had hit headlines in 2016 when he had been invited to the deliver a lecture at the Haryana Assembly.
