Lucknow: Former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday wrote an open letter to people of the country in view of the ongoing West Bengal crisis.
Akhilesh Yadav attacked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by quoting Charlie Sheen-starrer TV series and said these "Two and a Half Men are on the brink of destroying our nation and everything it stands for."
"Today the attack on Bengal is not only an attack on the values and tenets of the Constitution but also an attack on the dreams of our founding fathers - the very same founding fathers who the BJP is desperate to co-opt into their narrative, because they have no link whatsoever to our Constitution and therefore the values it espouses," Akhilesh Yadav wrote in his letter, adding, "in fact, our founding fathers were in direct opposition to the views espoused by the BJP and the RSS."
Akhilesh Yadav's letter has come at a time when the West Bengal government is embroiled in a war with the CBI over the latter's 'secret operation' to question Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar in the Saradha chit fund scam cases.
The Samajwadi Party chief called the BJP IT cell "Internet terrorist cell" and claimed that the minorities under the present government are living in fear of lynch mob "fueled by rumours spread by BJP IT cells".
Akhilesh Yadav said that in the last 24 hours, it has become clear that the democratic republic is being systematically hollowed out and destroyed.
Not so long ago, in November 2017, dissenting BJP leader Yashwant Sinha had said the same thing. He had said the government was being run by two and a half men.
"People say yeh dhai logon ki sarkaar hai. And you probably know who the half is," he said, referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP chief Amit Shah and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley -- the half.
Meanwhile, Akhilesh Yadav, in his letter, further alleged that the BJP's formula is to get "unfriendly politicians embroiled in legal battles, buried under false charges, attacked as anti-national and seditious" to stay in power for 50 years. "This is just one of the many nakedly political attacks being orchestrated across the country by the two and a half men who run this country."
"In attacking Mamata Banerjee, these two and a half men forgot her past. Here is a woman who was dragged from Jyoti Basu's office by her hair for demanding action against rapists and put in jail. Here is a woman who defeated the old patriarchy of the Communist Party in their bastian. Here is a woman who took on large, industrial interests so that farmers would not lose their lands."
Ending his letter, Akhilesh Yadav appealed the judiciary, CBI, the IAS and the IPS and all the national institutions to "prevail against the constant attacks on them and to fight back with integrity". He also appealed the people of India to not let the two and a half men to erode the very basis of the country.
