In the recent development, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu government on Sunday announced to further extend the lockdown till May 31 in order to contain the spread of novel coronavirus. The development has come a day before the nation is set to conclude the third phase of country-wide lockdown that was announced on May 3.
News Agency ANI reported that 'Government of Tamil Nadu extends #COVID19 lockdown in the state till 31st May 2020.'
In an official notice released on May 17, Maharashtra government said that 'to take certain emergency measure to prevent and contain the spread of the virus, it is expedient to extend the lockdown in the entire State of Maharashtra further till midnight of 31st May, 2020.'
The notice further read that 'The calibrated phase-wise relaxation/lifting of lockdown orders will be notified in due course.'
Witnessing the increasing number of Coronavirus cases in the state, Maharashtra Chief Minister had reportedly chaired a high-level meeting earlier this week to take stock of the corona induces pandemic. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Water Resources Minister Jayant Patil, Urban Development Minister Eknath Shinde, Industries Minister Subhash Desai, Revenue Minister Balasaheb Thorat, and PWD Minister Ashok Chavan had also attended the meeting.
During the discussion with the officials and Ministers, the government expressed its intent to extend the lockdown in Metropolitan Region (MMR) Pune, Solapur, Aurangabad, and Malegaon town in Nashik district till May 31. It also discussed the possible resumption of economic activities in some regions of the state.
Maharashtra has become the epicenter for Coronavirus in the country, recording as many as 30706 cases till date. In Mumbai, Dharavi has continued to be the worst-hit cluster. As of now, 7088 people have recovered from the disease and been discharged from hospitals while 1,135 died because of COVID-19 infection.
On Tuesday during the address to the nation, the Prime Minister had talked about a fourth phase of the lockdown or Lockdown 4.0. Further details and the protocols for the fourth phase is still awaited.
