Queen Elizabeth II's Husband Passes Away At 99

Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, passed away on April 9 at Windsor Castle. He was 99. Philip was married to Queen Elizabeth II for 73 long years.

“It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle,” the official Twitter handle of Royal Family said in a post.

Prince Philip decided to retire from his royal duties on August 2, 2017 at the age of 96. Philip, who hailed from Danish and Greek families, was the nephew of Lord Louis Mountbatten, under whom India became an independent country.

Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine on January 9, 2021 by a household doctor at Windsor Castle. Philip was hospitalized on February 16 as a precautionary measure after he complained of feeling unwell. The Buckingham Palace issued a statement to confirm that Philip was getting treated for an infection. Last month, he underwent a successful procedure for his heart condition.

Prince Philip tied the knot with Queen Elizabeth II on November 20, 1947. They had four children together- Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward. The couple also had eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Philip counselled Prince Charles to make up his mind to either ask Princess Diana for marriage or break off their courtship. The couple married five months later. Philip and the Queen tried to sort things out between Charles and Diana after their marriage broke down but to no avail.

Prince Philip passed away two months before his 100th birthday on June 10. He made sporadic public appearances after the COVID-19 pandemic engulfed the entire world.
