Noida: The Greater Noida's famers' protest against land acquisitions by the government turned violent on Saturday, when the agitators started pelting stones at the police.
Greater Noida District Magistrate was also shot in leg in the brawl and suffered severe injuries.
The police had gone to free a driver and two helpers of the Uttar Pradesh Roadways bus that was being held hostage by the protesting farmers.
As the local police tried to take custody of the hostages, the anger of the protesting farmers erupted and they started hurling stones at the police party. Sensing the aggravated situation, police had to resort to tear gas to disperse the crowd.
The agitating farmers also jammed the Yamuna Expressway resulting in a major traffic blockade.
As per the reports, the farmers have refused to talk to the district administration and said that they would only release the officials after UP CM Mayawati intervenes in the matter.
The farmers have been demanding that only half their lands should be acquired and the rest should be handed over to them after development.
