Delhi: The global coronavirus cases surged past the grim milestone of 11 million on Friday, according to the latest tally updated by John Hopkins University. The death toll due to the lethal pandemic worldwide stood at 5,23,613. The health catastrophe has accounted for the lives of more than half a million people in seven months.
The United States continued to be the worst affected nation with 57,683 new COVID-19 cases reported in 24 hours Friday, as per the latest tally updated by Johns Hopkins University.
The Baltimore-based university's tracker showed the total number of coronavirus cases in the United States were reported at 2,793,022 as of 8:30 pm (0030 Saturday GMT). Meanwhile the death toll climbed up 129,405.
Brazil with over 1.5 million cases was the worst affected nation in Latin America, making up 23 percent of the global total of people infected by the pandemic. India has been witnessing an alarming rise in the number of Covid-19 cases with the total tally crossing the 6 lakh mark. The sub continent nation has become the new epicenter in Asia, rising to 625,000 cases.
Asia and the Middle East have around 12% and 9% respectively, according to the Reuters tally, which uses government reports.
