BSF jawan PK Shaw, detained by Pakistan Rangers

New Delhi:A Border Security Force (BSF) jawan who had been in the custody of Pakistani Rangers was safely handed back to India on Wednesday. BSF Jawan, identified as PK Shaw, had inadvertently crossed the border and was detained by the Pakistani Rangers last month. "Today BSF Jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw, who had been in the custody of Pakistan Rangers since 23 April 2025, was handed over to India at about 1030 hours through the Joint Check Post Attari, Amritsar. The handover was conducted peacefully and in accordance with established protocols," a statement released by the BSF said.

40-year-old Shaw, who was stationed in Punjab's Firozpur, inadvertently crossed the border into Pakistan on April 23. This occurred just a day after the brutal terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of 26 innocent civilians. The BSF had issued a strict advisory to its soldiers to be alert and vigilant during border patrol..

Mamata Banerjee had expressed concern

Earlier on May 5, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had expressed her concern for the BSF Constable from Hooghly who was detained by Pakistan Rangers. She said that Trinamool Congress leader Kalyan Banerjee is in touch with the family members. Mamata Banerjee said, "This is an extremely sad situation. His name is Sahu. Our party's Kalyan Banerjee is in touch with the family members. I want he should be rescued as soon as possible. We have clearly said that our party is with the government on the issues of internal and external security. We are not doing divide and rule here."

Border Security Force

The BSF is the primary force responsible for guarding the 3,323 km long India-Pakistan border, spanning the states of Jammu and Kashmir (including parts of the LoC), Punjab, Rajasthan, and Gujarat. This border is one of the most sensitive and volatile in the country, due to historical tensions and ongoing security challenges.
