Just days before the first phase of polling in Bihar, the police have arrested controversial former MLA Anant Singh in connection with the killing of Jan Suraaj worker Dular Chand Yadav, said officials on Sunday. Singh, 58-year-old, is Janata Dal United's (JDU) candidate from Mokama, where polling would be held in the first phase on November 6. Anant Singh was arrested around 2 hours ago... I want to assure the voters of Patna that elections will be held peacefully, and that they can fearlessly come out and vote. Patna Police and administration stand with the voters, and no one will be stopped from exercising their right," Sharma was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
Yadav was killed while he was campaigning for Jan Suraaj candidate Piyush Priyadarshi in Mokama on Thursday, following which the police registered four separate first information reports (FIRs), including one against Singh. His post-mortem report revealed that he died of cardiorespiratory failure due to shock caused by injury to the heart and lungs.
Singh later admitted that a clash had erupted between his supporters and Jan Suraaj workers, including Yadav. However, he blamed his old rival Suraj Bhan for the incident. Notably, Bhan's wife Veena Devi is contesting from Mokama as a Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) candidate.
Piyush Priyadarshi, who is Jan Suraaj candidate from Mokama, has welcomed Singh's arrest and called it a 'relief' for Yadav's family. However, she pointed out that it would be important to see how the police investigate this case.
"This is a good gesture, but it would have been good had they taken action sooner. Today, he was moving around in a convoy of 50 vehicles and even participated in election campaigning. When an FIR was registered against him, he should have been arrested sooner... But better late than never," she told ANI.
