Mahatma Gandhi's 67th martyrdom day: India pays homage to Father of the Nation New Delhi: The country pays homage to the father of the nation- Mahatma Gandhi on his martyrdom day on Saturday as he was assassinated on this day in 1948.

Many programmes will be organised today to mark the occasion. All-religion prayers will be held in Rajghat at Mahatma Gandhi's memorial. President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice President Mohd Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, and the three service Chiefs will lay wreaths at the memorial.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid his obeisance to the great man. Modi had visited Raj Ghat to pay his tributes there, as had several other ministers.

Modi also saluted the thousands of martyrs who courageously laid down their lives fighting for the nation, on the occasion of Martyr’s Day.

“Remembering the valour of all martyrs who gave their lives for the Nation. Their sacrifices remain etched in our memory.”, Modi tweeted on Saturday. Calling for a nationwide observance of silence.

Modi tweeted, “Let us as a nation stand together in silence for 2 minutes at 11 AM today as a mark of respect towards our brave martyrs.”

Modi also paid his respects to Gandhi after laying wreaths at Gandhi Smriti in New Delhi. Gujarat, meanwhile, is paying rich tribute to Gandhi on his death anniversary.

An all-religion prayer meeting has been organised at the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad and Kirti Mandir in Porbandar, the birth place of Mahatma Gandhi. Prominent leaders from various political parties and other dignitaries will pay floral tributes at Raj Ghat in New Delhi. On this day, Gandhi was murdered by Nathuram Godse, an advocate of Hindu nationalism, who accused Gandhi of favouring political demands of India’s Muslims.
