Om Puri passes away, PM Modi, Bollywood offer condolences Mumbai: Veteran actor Om Puri passed away at the age of 66, on Friday morning, due to a severe cardiac arrest.

Born on 18 October 1950, the actor was known for his outstanding performances in not just Indian but also Pakistani, British, and Hollywood movies.

Puri's sudden demise has left the industry and his friends in Bollywood shell-shocked.

Naseeruddin Shah, Anupam Kher and Shabana Azmi, who co-starred with Om Puri in several films, paid moving tribute on Twitter. Mr Kher was among the first to arrive after the actor died.

"I have known Om Puri for d last 43 years. For me he will always be a great actor, a kind and generous man. And that is how world should remember him," veteran actor Anupam Kher said in a tweet.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled Puri’s demise and recalled his long career in theatre and films, reported PTI.

Mahesh Bhatt tweeted, "Goodbye Om! A part of me goes with you today. How can I ever forget those passionate nights we spent together talking about cinema & life?"

Actor Shabana Azmi also shared a few details via twitter. She posted, "OM Puri undergoing postmortem at Cooper Hospital.Will be taken to Trishul around 3 pm Funeral at Oshiwara electric crematorium around 6 pm."

Other Bollywood celebrities also took to Twitter to mourn Puri's demise.

Actor Akshay Kumar tweeted, "Sad to hear about the passing away of the very talented Om Puri, my co-actor in many films...heartfelt condolences to the family. #RIP."

Om Puri debuted in 1976 and went on to star in a wide range of films in India as well as in the US and Britain. In 1990, he won the Padma Shri, which is among India's highest civilian awards.

His iconic films include "Ardh Satya", "Aakrosh", "Maachis" and "Paar". He also achieved mainstream success with films as diverse as "Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro" and "Don 2".

Om Puri won the National Award for "Arohan" and "Ardh Satya".

His more recent Hindi film roles included "Singh Is Kinng", "Mere Baap Pehle Aap" and "Billu". He was seen in the role of Mohammad Ali Kasuri in "Road to Sangam" (2009). In 2010, he appeared in The Hangman.

He was also known for his television work; notable among them are "Bharat Ek Khoj" and "Kakkaji Kahin".

In 2004, Om Puri was awarded an honorary OBE for his contribution to the British film industry.
