Nagpur: Australia captain Ricky Ponting won the toss and elected to field against New Zealand in a World Cup Group A match overshadowed by the devastating earthquake in Christchurch.
At least 113 people have been killed as a result of tremors in the New Zealand city and the teams wore black armbands and observed a minute's silence before the start of play.
Australia have fielded an unchanged side that beat Zimbabwe in their opening match while there is one change for New Zealand with Jamie How replacing Jacob Oram.
The clash has been named as Chappell-Hadlee Trophy and the two sides will play for the first time outside Australia and New Zealand for the trophy.
