500 free scholarship of 40 lakhs to Indian students, Indo Russian Education Summit offers opportunities

New Delhi: After years old ties between Russia and India in Defence, Space and Energy sector Russia is coming to offer huge opportunities and tie ups to tap Indian Education sector.

With  the aim of fostering collaboration and facilitating exchanges between educational institutions in Russia and India, Rossotrudnichestvo, along with The Embassy of Russia in India, Russian House and Rus Education, is holding an Indo Russian Education Summit in New Delhi from April 11th to 13th, 2024.

Oleg Osipov, Director, Russian House & Counselor, Embassy of Russian Federation in India informed that the 3 days summit aims to facilitate exchanges between educational institutions in Russia and India as well as contribute to strengthening of the cultural and humanitarian ties. He informed that the 3 days summit will be held in Russian House and Le Meridian Hotel and on the third day Russian delegates will visit Indian Universities & hospitals in Delhi.

Osipov said the timing of this summit was chosen keeping in mind the Indian Elections and examinations in schools & colleges.

The topics for discussion will include Russia, India and BRICS...the role of higher Education and development of comprehensive cooperation between India Russia & BRICS nations. Second topic will be career opportunitues for Indians in Russian Universities.

There are around 30,000 Indian students studying in Russia, 85% of whom are studying medical. More than 50,000 passouts from Russian Universities are currently working in various sectors in India and abroad, Osipov informed.   

About 20 Indian universities have confirmed attendence in the summit. The Russian list consists of Universities from Moscow  & Petersburg amoung others.

Vector Gorelykh, Head of Education Coorperation Dep, Russian House said, 'It is an opportunity for Indian students to study free in Russia. They will get admission regardless of age. The date for submitting form for session 2024-25 was Jan 31 but can be extended.'

Senior officials of several Russian ministries and agencies along with the delegates from more than 50 higher education institutions are expected to participate in the event. The summit will include panel discussions, round table conferences, exhibitions offering networking opportunities.  

Apprising about the event Osipov said, 'The summit will be attended by four Deputy Ministers from the Russian Federation, representing pivotal sectors such as education, energy, social and economic development, and science & technology.' Attendance of 104 esteemed delegates hailing from 51 prestigious universities is expected.

The Russian Federation is extending 500 free scholarship seats across various courses, spanning from medical sciences, engineering, nuclear science, aviation, management, aerospace, and more. Additionally, Rus Education is offering scholarships worth INR 40 lacs to deserving students. Joint collabaration in Research, student exchange, faculty exchange, curriculum sharing, mutual recognition of degrees and possibilities of assured placements in business and companies to Indian students in Russia is expecetd to be discussed.  

Dinesh Singla, Leading Expert in Indo Russian Education System informed that the summit will feature an exhibition where Russian universities will showcase a wide range of courses, including MBBS in Russia, engineering, nuclear science, aviation, management, aerospace, and many others providing a unique opportunity for Indian students to directly engage with representatives from these universities and gain first-hand information about the diverse educational offerings available to them offering a gateway to insights into the various career prospects awaiting them in Russia, but also unveils a myriad of options of post-graduation, empowering them further.

Ansering to queries Osipov said apart from medical, Russia has provided opportunities and trained Indian students in military equippments as well as trained teachers. These Russia trained students will get opportunities in various joint ventures between India and Russia. How to absorb them in Indian projects will be discussed too.

As per Russian rules there are provisions to stay back and seek employment after completeing studies. Also visa rules have been eased by the Russian govt, Singla informed.

How to get scholarship? One needs to register on the website educationinrussia.com for courses and submit your application. The courses for which applications are invited are for the year 2025-26. The courses start in Autunm. 1000 people applied for 2024-25 out of which 200 were considered for admission. In some universities 40 submissions are there for a single seat.

19 universities of India have confirmed tie up with Russian Universities. Some of them are JNU, Jamia University, Sharda, SGP univ, Max institute OF Excellence, Amrita Institute if Medical Sciences, Mata Vaishno Devi Inistitute of Medical, North Campus University,SRCC, DU, Jamia Hamdard, Indo Russian Youth Association, Santosh University.

On the safety of Students in the present war conditions in Russia Osipov said, 'Russia is safe for students.' Russia as education destination has never been promoted. US, UK, Europe are Indian students favourite destination. India and Russia are strategic partner as well, Singla said.

The basic requirement for Russian university is a 12th grade qualified and for students convenience Russian universities are introducing English language courses.

Scholarships applications for 2024-25 have closed on Jan 31, 2024. Aspirants can apply for 2025-26 session scholarships now. Last date is usually Nov/ Dec. can be extended till January.
