New Delhi: A bomb threat was reported at the Chennai home of actor-turned-politician and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay on Thursday, just days after a stampede at his rally in Karur left 41 people dead. The threat came amid growing criticism of Vijay following the tragic incident at the TVK rally, which left dozens dead and several others injured.
Security has been stepped up around Vijay’s residence in Neelankarai as a precaution. After a thorough search, police confirmed that no explosives were found and that the threat was a false alarm. An investigation has been launched to trace the source of the hoax call and identify those behind it.
The threat to Vijay’s home comes amid a recent spike in similar incidents targeting prominent figures and institutions across Tamil Nadu. Just a week ago, Chief Minister M K Stalin was reported to have received a bomb threat as well.
Other high-profile targets in Tamil Nadu during this period have included Governor R N Ravi, DMK MP Kanimozhi, actor Trisha, comedian and actor S V Shekher, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) headquarters at Kamalalayam.
Additionally, the Chennai offices of the newspaper The Hindu on Anna Salai reportedly received bomb threats, according to a report published by the paper earlier this week.
A separate report stated that the Tamil Nadu Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) has remained on high alert in recent weeks due to the surge in such threats. The warnings have targeted places of worship, residences of prominent artists, and even foreign consulates.
The TVK has approached the state police, requesting permission for party president Vijay to visit Karur and meet the families of the 41 people who died in the stampede at his rally on September 27.
Speaking to reporters after submitting the petition to Director-General of Police (DGP) G Venkataraman, a TVK spokesperson said the party had sought security arrangements for their chief.
Actor-politician Vijay, who hosted the rally, has faced criticism from some quarters for not visiting the affected families in person.
