Noted Gandhian, environmentalist Anupam Mishra no more

Noted Gandhian, environmentalist Anupam Mishra no more New Delhi: Noted Gandhian, journalist, environmentalist, and water conservationist Anupam Mishra passed away at the age of 68 at the All India Institute for Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here early Monday morning, a family member said.

A patient of prostate cancer for the last one year, Mishra took his last breath at All India Institute of Medical Sciences(AIIMS).

He was not only a water conservationist but also a journalist, environmentalist and was best known for his book 'Aaj Bhi Khare Hain Talaab' in 1993 which had detailed research about alternatives for saving water.

He travelled to villages across India describing the value of time-tested systems of water harvesting.

His books on the work of people/society organising themselves, to harvest and manage water - Aaj Bhi Khare Hain Talaab and Rajasthan Ki Rajat Boondein, are considered landmark works in the field, and continue to inspire several individuals even today, to take up work on setting up and reviving these time-tested water harvesting systems.

In his landmark book Aaj Bhi Khare Hain Talaab (Ponds are still relevant, 1993)on water conservation Anupam Mishra documented the life and work of several individuals and communities, across the country, in setting up water harvesting and management systems through lakes, ponds, tanks

He advocated conservation of traditional water structures in India as well as abroad.

He had been awarded the 1996 Indira Gandhi Paryavaran Puraskar (IGPP) award instituted by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India.
