Several feared drowned as tourist bridge collapses over Indrayani river

A devastating incident struck the Kundmala area of Dehu in Pune district on Sunday afternoon when a pedestrian bridge over the Indrayani River collapsed, sweeping several people into the river's swift current. The incident occurred around 3:30 pm and resulted in at least three confirmed deaths, while many others remain missing.

Bridge collapses amid heavy tourist rush

The bridge, located in the pilgrimage town of Dehu, associated with the revered saint Sant Tukaram, was a popular spot for both devotees and tourists. With large crowds gathered due to the weekend, the bridge was heavily crowded at the time of the collapse.

According to local MLA Sunil Shelke, who was present at the site, approximately 100 people were on or near the bridge when it gave way. Eyewitnesses reported that the collapse was sudden, offering no chance for escape. Many fell into the river and were swept away by its strong current. Initial estimates suggest that 20 to 25 people may have been carried away.

Bridge was in dilapidated condition, overweight suspected

Preliminary investigations suggest that the bridge was in dilapidated condition, raising serious concerns about its maintenance. Eyewitnesses also stated that motorcycles were present on the bridge at the time, possibly adding to the load and leading to the structure's failure.

“The bridge was never meant to support such weight. There were motorcycles and heavy footfall — a recipe for disaster,” said a local resident.

Rescue operations ongoing, two NDRF teams deployed

Emergency services responded swiftly, with rescue operations led by the Talegaon Dabhade Police under the Pimpri-Chinchwad Police Commissionerate. Teams from the police, fire brigade, and divers were immediately deployed to the site.

As of the latest reports, two bodies have been recovered, while 38 people have been rescued alive. Search efforts are continuing for others feared to be missing.

Two teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have arrived at the location to bolster the rescue operations. 10 to 12 ambulances have also been stationed at the site to provide immediate medical assistance to the injured.
